The Sunnah of Eating: A Practical Guide

The etiquette of eating as taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) — from the dua before, to the manners during, to the gratitude after.

T

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A human being fills no vessel worse than his stomach. A few mouthfuls are enough to keep his back straight. But if he must, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath." (Tirmidhi)

The Sunnah of eating is not a list of empty rituals; it is a complete etiquette that transforms a basic need into an act of worship. From the moment we sit, to the way we hold the food, to the words we say after — every step is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah.

Before eating, we say Bismillah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention it at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end)." (Abu Dawud)

We eat with the right hand, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to a boy who was eating with his left: "Eat with your right hand." (Muslim)

We eat from what is in front of us, not reaching across the platter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Umar ibn Abi Salamah, who was a young boy in his care: "Boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." (Bukhari and Muslim)

We do not criticize the food. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never criticized food; if he liked it, he ate it, and if he did not, he left it. (Bukhari)

When we finish, we say Alhamdulillah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is pleased with the servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and who drinks a drink and praises Him for it." (Muslim)

These are small acts, but they are the difference between a life lived with awareness of Allah and a life lived in heedlessness. May Allah make our eating, our drinking, and our every act an act of worship.
